Problems solved by technology

[0009] In addition, when the size of the low-density parity-check matrix H used to decode the LDPC coded signal reaches a predetermined size, the interconnectivity between the first processing module and the second processing module (for example, a parity engine and a bit engine) will increase significantly

Embodiment Construction

[0142] LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) codes are capacity-approximating Forward Error Correcting Codes (ECC) that are being adopted by a large number of communication standards (eg IEEE 802.3an, IEEE 802.11n, 802.20, DVB-S2). Related application areas include magnetic recording, wireless, high-speed data transmission over copper cables and optical fibers.

[0143] In one embodiment, the LDPC decoding process is performed using an iterative decoding method in which messages are passed back and forth between check node processing (also sometimes referred to as check engine processing) and bit node processing (also sometimes referred to as bit engine processing) (For example, check side messages and bit side messages (sometimes also called variable side messages)). This is sometimes referred to as a message-passing decoding process, operating on encoded graph representations (eg, LDPC bipartite graphs, sometimes referred to in the industry as "Tanner" graphs).

Abstract

Multi-code LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) decoder. Multiple LDPC coded signals can be decoded using hardware provisioned for a minimum requirement needed to decode each of the multiple LDPC coded signals. In embodiments where each LDPC matrix (e.g., employed to decode each LDPC coded signal) includes a common number of non-null sub-matrices. In embodiments where each LDPC code includes a different number of non-null sub-matrices within its respective LDPC matrix, then a different number of memories are employed when decoding each LDPC coded signal. Various degrees of parallelism in decoding can also be employed in which different numbers of bit engines and check engines can be employed when decoding different LDPC coded signals.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a communication system, and more specifically, to a decoding technology for a Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) coded signal in the communication system. Background technique [0002] Data communication systems have been continuously developed for many years. In recent years, communication systems using iterative error correction codes are the focus of researchers. One of the most concerned is the communication system using LDPC codes. In the case of the same signal-to-noise ratio, the bit error rate of a communication system using iterative codes is generally lower than that of communication systems using other codes. [0003] A continuing and major development direction in this field is to reduce the signal-to-noise ratio in communication systems to achieve a specific bit error rate. The ideal goal is to try to study the Shannon's limit in communication channels, which can be seen as the data transmission rate used in...
