Abstract

There are provided a method and apparatus for adaptive weight selection for motion compensated prediction. The apparatus includes an encoder (100) for encoding a picture by deriving a set of weighting parameters, selecting at least one weighting parameter in the set based upon a selection criteria, and applying the selected at least one weighting parameter to a reference picture used to encode the picture.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 764,493, filed February 2, 2006, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The principles of the present invention relate generally to video coding, and more particularly to methods and apparatus for adaptive weight selection for motion compensated prediction. Background technique [0004] By forming a reference picture prediction of the picture to be coded and encoding only the difference between the current picture and the reference picture prediction, a video compression encoder and / or decoder greatly improves compression efficiency. The more closely the reference image prediction is related to the current image, the fewer bits are used to compress the image. Reference picture predictions can be generated using spatial or temporal sampling from previously valid pictures or picture blocks. ...
