A method and a system for establishing a video conference are disclosed, which are applied to a video conference network comprising a plurality of multipoint control units (MCU), wherein the method comprises the steps of: establishing tree-like cascade relation of each MCU; reporting progressively the top MCU from other MCUs to an original place list of the top MCU, selecting identifiers gathering the place of the video conference to form a reservation place list, and issuing the reservation place list and conference information for the video conference to other MCUs; the method also comprises the step that: each MCU utilizes the conference information and the reservation place list to configure itself with a view to the video conference, and uses the configuration to establish the video conference. The invention can more simply and conveniently realize establishment of the video conference in the case that scale of the video conference network is vast, involving places or MCUs are more.
