Abstract

An exhaust system that processes exhaust generated by an engine is provided. The system generally includes a particulate filter (PF) that filters particulates from the exhaust wherein an upstream end of the PF receives exhaust from the engine. A grid of electrically resistive material is applied to an exterior upstream surface of the PF and selectively heats exhaust passing through the grid to initiate combustion of particulates within the PF. A catalyst coating is applied to the PF that increases a temperature of the combustion of the particulates within the PF.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 934,988, filed June 15, 2007. The content of the above application is incorporated herein by reference. Statement of Government Rights [0002] This invention is made pursuant to US Government Contract No. DE-FC-04-03AL67635 with the Department of Energy (DoE). The US Government has certain rights in this invention. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to methods and systems for heating particulate filters (or particulate traps). Background technique [0004] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may not constitute prior art. [0005] Diesel engines are generally more efficient than gasoline engines because of the increased compression ratio and higher energy density of diesel fuel. The combustion cycle of the diesel engine produces particles, which are usual...
