Embodiment Construction

[0024] Some basic principles are known for providing naturally visible three-dimensional images, which are commonly known as three-dimensional autostereoscopic images. It is known that when the lens array is used to view the same object or an array of marks located near the focal plane of the lens, the virtual image is displayed. If the lens array has a different pitch (or repeat length) compared to the array of the same object, a certain degree of magnification will occur. For the observer, the virtual image appears to be in a different plane than its real position. Known. This phenomenon has been called Moiré amplification. The basic principle can be found in "The Moiré magnifier", MCHutley et al, Pure Appl. Opt. 3 (1994) 133-142 ("Moiré magnifier", MCHutley et al., Pure Applied Optics 3, 1994, p. 133-142 pages). Additional background can be found in "Properties of Moirémagnifiers", H. Kamal, et al, Opt. Eng. 37(11) 3007-3014 (November 1998) (Characteristics of Moiré magni...

Abstract

The invention discloses a keypad having a virtual floating image that appears to a user to be in a plane other than the apparent plane of the keypad surface. More particularly, the indicia on the keypad appear to float above or below the surface of the device. The keypad can be, for example, the keypad on a cell phone. For such an application there would be more than one array of indicia present on the keypad. For example, there might be ten arrays of indicia, which provide the numerals from 0 to 9 and two more arrays to provide virtual images of the * and # keys. In some embodiments, the keypad is integrated with an illumination source that light up the indicia. The invention also provides a method of manufacturing a key pad with a virtual floating image.

Description

[0001] Related patent applications [0002] This patent application requires priority of the U.S. Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 804,009, entitled "Keyboard with Virtual Image", filed on June 6, 2006, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to electric keyboards and touch panels, and more particularly to devices that provide markings that appear to be virtual images above or below the apparent surface of the keyboard. Background technique [0004] The current trend for portable electronic devices such as notebook computers, PDAs, and mobile phones is moving toward smaller, thinner, and lighter components and devices. In addition, there is a desire to have a larger area display within the reduced electronic package and a display with multiple active colors in general. In terms of thinness, weight, visual appeal, and multi-functional use of space, data entry pads or keyboards present o...
