Problems solved by technology

[0008] The need for fast, cost-effective heating is achieved by the application of a liquid heating medium (such as heat flow), which transfers heat to the packaging container wall faster than a gaseous heating medium, but on the other hand, there is such a drawback that it Exposed cut edges that have the potential to penetrate the outside of the packaging container and thereby compromise the integrity and dimensional stability of the packaging container

Embodiment Construction

[0028] Although the invention will be described with particular reference to the drawings, it is not limited exclusively to this embodiment. It will be apparent to a person skilled in the art, given the guidance of the present description, that various modifications and changes can be made without departing from the scope of the innovative concept as defined in the appended claims.

[0029] In the left hand part of the figure there is shown a number of packaging containers 10 containing food, which have been heat treated using the method according to the invention in order to prolong the shelf life of the food. The packaging container 10 is manufactured from a roll or preform of packaging laminate comprising a paper or paperboard layer and an outer liquid-tight plastic coating, which can withstand heat treatment at temperatures of about 80-140°C.

Abstract

A method, for purposes of extending its shelf-life, of heat-treating a food which is packed in a packaging container (10) of a packaging laminate comprising a layer of paper or paperboard and outer, liquid-tight coatings of plastic. The packaging container (10) is exposed to a liquid heating medium, e.g. hot steam, which is sprayed against the outer walls of the packaging container (10) in order to heat and hold the food at a predetermined treatment temperature, e.g. 80-140 DEG C, during a predetermined period of time so as to exterminate, eliminate or deactivate harmful microorganisms inside the packaging container (10). Thereafter, the food is cooled by means of cold water which is sprayed against the outer walls of the packaging container (10). In order to avoid the risk that liquid penetrate into exposed incision edges on the outside of the packaging container (10) during the heat treatment, the packaging container (10), before this treatment, is brought into contact with a hydrophobic impregnation agent for absorption and penetration of the hydrophobic impregnation agent in the exposed incision edges.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for the treatment of food products, with a view to prolonging their shelf life, packaged in packaging containers consisting of a packaging laminate comprising layers of paper or cardboard and an outer liquid-tight plastic coating, in the method with The packaging container of the packaged food product is exposed to a liquid heating medium to heat and maintain the food product at a predetermined processing temperature for a predetermined time, and in this method the packaging container is subsequently exposed to a liquid cooling medium to cool the heat treatment after food. Background technique [0002] Foodstuffs are often packaged and shipped in single-use packaging containers, and a large number of such single-use packages are manufactured from packaging materials that include layers of paper or cardboard and an outer liquid-tight plastic coating. [0003] Food packaging is carried out in an aseptic environm...
