Embodiment Construction

[0024] Embodiments of the present invention may be used to increase the performance of mathematical calculations within microprocessors and computers. In some embodiments, spline calculations can be used to perform various mathematical operations at a higher performance level than some prior art spline calculations. In at least one embodiment, spline calculation performance may be improved by accelerating at least one of the most time-consuming and resource-intensive operations involved in performing spline calculations. In one embodiment, range detection instructions and corresponding hardware logic are provided to speed up detection of ranges in splines corresponding to various polynomials used in spline calculations.

[0025] figure 1 A microprocessor is shown in which at least one embodiment of the invention may be used. Specifically, figure 1 Microprocessor 100 is shown having one or more processor cores 105 and 110, each processor core having associated therewith loca...

Abstract

A technique to accelerate range detection in a spline calcuation. In one embodiment, an instruction and corresponding logic are provided to perform range detection within a computer or processor.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present invention relate generally to the field of information processing, and more specifically, to the field of performing range detection in computing systems and microprocessors. Background technique [0002] The performance of mathematical functions in computer hardware such as a microprocessor may rely on the use of a look-up table (LUT) stored in some location such as cache or main memory. When performing mathematical functions in hardware, Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) instructions may perform multiple memory operations to access the LUT. For example, a SIMD instruction that performs a function based on multiple input operands may access a LUT for each of the input operands in order to obtain the resulting output of the SIMD function. Because some processor architectures do not provide parallel access to multiple LUTs, but instead use the same memory access logic to access one or more LUTs, these LUT accesses may o...
