Embodiment Construction

[0034] With reference to the accompanying drawings, figure 1 A system 10 is shown for intravenously dispensing medical fluids to a patient, said system 10 comprising a pump 12 according to the present invention. The pump 12 may be housed within a frame 14 and may be electrically connected to a controller 16 which may also be housed within said frame 14 for controlling the operation of the pump 12 .

[0035] The liquid inlet of the pump 12 ( figure 1not shown) fluid is connected to a fluid source for dispensing the fluid to the patient. A suitable source of fluid may include a bag 20, collectively referred to as an IV bag, containing fluid 22 therein. The liquid 22 may include various medicines known in the art, and may also include other liquids, such as physiological saline. The system 10 further includes a first zone of tubes 24 comprising a single tube or a plurality of interconnected tubes. Tube 24 may pass through tube inlet 18 of frame 14 and then be fluidly connecte...

Abstract

A pump module (12) for use in a medical fluid dispensing system (10) is provided that includes a pump body (50) having first and second portions (54, 56) where at least one of the first and second portions includes first and second fluid chambers (62a, 62b) The module (12) further includes at least one membrane operably associated with the fluid chambers (62a, 62b), and first and second actuators (88a, 88b) operably associated with this membrane (82) for the purpose of displacing the membrane (82) and further for displacing fluid from the first and second chambers (62a, 62b).

Description

Technical field: [0001] The present invention relates to pumps and in particular to pump modules for use in medical fluid dispensing systems. Background technique: [0002] Various known pumps are used to dispense medical fluids. Syringes, alone or in combination with syringe pumps, are widely used to dispense relatively small quantities of medical fluids, which may contain high concentrations of drugs. The maximum volume of the syringe is usually 60mL. After this dose has been dispensed, the health care provider must replace the spent syringe to continue administering the drug. Therefore, syringes cannot be used for bolus applications, such as bolus blood supply to patients in need or dispensing bolus fluids (such as saline) to burn patients in different circumstances. [0003] When used with a pump, the pump automatically operates a single plunger or piston of a syringe. Usually the plunger tip is made of soft rubber. When the plunger is pushed to dispense liquid, the...
