Problems solved by technology

Clamping force can decrease over time, and since there is only one clamp holding the blade, the system becomes increasingly unstable, causing additional vibration on the blade and potentially less effective cutting

Embodiment Construction

[0018] For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will be made to the embodiments or examples in the drawings and specific language will be used to describe the same. However, it should be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto. Any changes or further modifications in the described embodiments, and any further applications of the principles of the invention described herein are contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled in the art to which this disclosure pertains.

[0019] Primarily, the present disclosure relates to bone cutting surgical systems that include hand-held, high speed bone cutting surgical saws, such as sagittal saws and oscillating saws, and cutting microsaw blades. The saw includes a collet assembly having a protrusion, such as a pin or a lug, that engages or extends into an aperture in the cutting saw blade to secure the blade in place within the collet assembly. Abstract

A hand-held surgical cutting instrument (102) for cutting bone material with a surgical micro-saw blade (104) which has a plurality of opening (198) formed therein. The surgical cutting instrument includes a hand-graspable body (106) for manipulating the cutting instrument and a blade coupling mechanism (116) attached to the body and being configured to attach to the surgical micro-saw blade. The blade coupling mechanism includes a first coupling member (120) including a first blade-contacting surface (130). The first blade-contacting surface has at least one first protrusion (134) extending there from and is configured to engage a first opening in the surgical saw blade. The blade coupling mechanism including a second coupling member (138) including a second blade-contacting surface (144) facing the first blade-contacting surface of the first coupling member. The second blade-contacting surface having at least one second protrusion (154) extending there from and configured to engage a second opening in the surgical saw blade.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to surgical cutting instruments, and more particularly, to surgical cutting instruments having dual-surface interlock couplings. Background technique [0002] Bone-cutting surgical saws, such as sagittal or oscillating saws, cut most efficiently at very high speeds, such as 10,000-40,000 revolutions per minute. These high speeds result in high levels of vibration and can cause blade deflection during cutting. Therefore, actual saw blade cuts often have a thickness considerably greater than the actual saw blade thickness. For example, a cutting saw blade having a thickness of 0.015 inches cannot cut grooves with a width less than 0.030 inches. [0003] Some vibrations can be attributed to inefficient coupling systems. The coupling system on traditional microsaws clamps each end of the blade, thereby firmly holding the blade in place. A typical system includes a protrusion on the bottom jaw that penetrates an aperture i...
