Abstract

The invention relates to a method for a modem to learn a service permanent virtual circuit (PVC) and a DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer). The method comprises the following steps: the DSLAM closes all PVCs preconfigured on a port between the DSLAM and the modem and initiates a link establishment flow to the modem; after link establishment is succeeded, the DSLAM opens the service PVC used for communicating with the modem in all the PVCs and sends a data packet through the business PVC; and the modem learns the service PVC through the received data packet. The method is easy to realize and can support a DSL terminal automatically configured with the PVC to effectively, preferentially and automatically configure the required service PVC.
