Problems solved by technology

Another drawback associated with common single-wire coil configurations is the frequent number of maneuvers required by the surgeon to introduce full-length coils into the aneurysm and the increased risk associated with such manipulations

Embodiment Construction

[0030] In an exemplary embodiment, the self-expandable aneurysm filling system of the present invention provides a self-expandable aneurysm filling device that achieves a generally spherical structure. Because the shape of the stent is predetermined so that the self-expandable aneurysm filling device is deployed as a single composite sphere, this design does not require manipulation or movement of the implanted stent. Once deployed, the self-expandable aneurysm filling device acts as an anchor that holds other coils, glue, or other compositions within the aneurysm sac.

[0031] The self-expandable aneurysm filling device according to the present invention not only covers the neck of the aneurysm, but also acts as a permanent embolism. Depending on the configuration and size of the aneurysm and the preference of the surgeon, the self-expandable aneurysm filling device according to the invention may also serve as the sole mechanical stabilization of the aneurysm.

Abstract

The self-expandable aneurysm filling device (102, 202), system and method provide for placement of the stent into an aneurysm (112) to at least partially fill and stabilize the aneurysm. The self -expandable aneurysm filling device (102) has a compressed undeployed configuration and an expanded three-dimensional deployed configuration, and a severable deployment junction (104, 204) releasably connects the self-expandable aneurysm filling device to a pusher wire (106, 206). The severable deployment junction can be mechanically, electrolytically, or thermally severed to separate the self-expandable aneurysm filling device from the pusher wire.

Description

[0001] Cross references to related patent applications [0002] This patent application is based on US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 096,546, filed September 12, 2008, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] The present invention generally relates to intravascular devices. More particularly, the present invention relates to endovascular devices for filling vascular conditions such as intracranial aneurysms. [0004] Current treatment of cerebral aneurysms is by open surgical clipping of the aneurysm or by intervening endovascular access. The mainstay of interventional endovascular therapy involves placement of one or more coils via a microcatheter into the aneurysm sac. One of the drawbacks associated with interventional endovascular treatments is that "wide neck" aneurysms are generally immune to such treatments due to the possibility that the coil, once positioned, will not be successfully retained within the aneurys...
