Problems solved by technology

The dip / liquid spin coating process is particularly attractive from a cost and simplification standpoint; however, it typically cannot fill servo-patterned features
One planarization process that can be used to avoid these limitations is chemical mechanical polishing (CMP); however, CMP is relatively expensive and difficult to implement, thus increasing the overall cost of the manufactured disk

Abstract

The present invention relates to magnetic disks, disk drive systems and methods of writing servo data on magnetic disks. Embodiments show patterned servo data that is used to facilitate subsequent servo writing to the disk while allowing the patterned disk to be planarized with a relatively simple planarization process. A disc drive system includes a disc patterned with magnetic lands and non-magnetic grooves. The disk also includes a boot band that may be disposed at the inner diameter of the disk. The lands of the leader tape have varying dimensions and are patterned with servo data of uniform magnetization polarity. The width of the guide strip is narrow enough to support the air bearing surface of the slider. Data tracks are configured circumferentially proximate the leader band. The slider reads the patterned servo data to cause writing of additional servo data in the data track.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the field of disk drive systems, and more particularly, to disks having patterned servo regions that assist in aligning a slider with data on the disk. Background technique [0002] Many computing systems use disk drive systems for mass storage of information. Disk drive systems typically include one or more sliders, which include read and write heads. The actuator / cantilever holds the slider above the disk. As the disk rotates, the airflow generated by the rotation of the disk causes the air bearing surface (ABS) of the slider to fly above the disk at a specific height. How high the slider flies depends on the shape of the ABS. As the slider flies on a cushion of air, a voice coil motor (VCM) moves the actuator / cantilever to position the read and write heads over selected tracks of the disk. [0003] Disks consist of data sectors and servo sectors. The servo sector includes servo data, and the servo data is used t...
