Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present disclosure generally relates to measuring muscle strength. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to devices and methods for measuring intrinsic hand muscle strength.

[0017] In general, the present disclosure provides, according to certain embodiments, an intrinsic hand strength measurement (IHSM) device comprising an adjustable limiter, a force transmitting member, a force sensor and a processing unit. In some embodiments, the IHSM device of the present disclosure may further include a display panel. The general purpose of the IHSM device of the present disclosure is to allow clinicians and researchers to quantify a subject's intrinsic hand muscle strength by recording various strength measurements such as peak force, endurance, and the like. Accordingly, in one embodiment, an IHSM device may be used to measure intrinsic hand strength by: restricting at least a portion of the subject's hand with an adjustable restraint; A force is generated o...

Abstract

A device for measuring intrinsic hand muscle strength comprising an adjustable restraint adapted to restrain at least a portion of a hand, a force transfer member adapted to fit on or around one or more digits of the hand, a force sensor connected to the force transfer member, and a processing unit connected to the force sensor is provided. Methods of measuring intrinsic hand strength are also provided.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 61 / 164,271, filed March 27, 2009, which is incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] The hand intrinsic muscles are important for dexterity and precise movement, thus, a decline in the hand intrinsic muscles results in a severe loss of function of the hand. The hand intrinsic muscles are located within the hand itself and are responsible for planar lateral movement of the fingers and abduction, adduction and flexion of the thumb. This is different from the extrinsic muscles that are measured through grasping movements. Hand trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, congenital hand defects, and a number of serious pathologies, such as neurological diseases, have been associated with reduced intrinsic hand muscle strength. In addition to blunt trauma, assessment of intrinsic hand muscle strength (IHMS) is necessary for conditions distinct from c...
