Embodiment Construction

[0026] spot color

[0027] In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, when printing spot colors as solid colors, corporate colors (also called "brand," "line," or "dot" colors) can be produced with the same vividness because corporate colors Printed essentially as is, rather than consisting of overlapping dots of process ink ink. Given the variability in dot position inherent in multicolor printing (whether using, for example, flexo, sheetfed offset, digital or other printing processes), using an exemplary embodiment according to the invention This approach will produce points of sharper, more vibrant and desaturated corporate colors than using traditional 4, 6 or even 7 process color sets.

[0028] Also, by using spot colors as part of a multicolor print set, gamut expansion over pure process ink sets can be achieved. An additional benefit is that remnants of a particular spot color can be "consumed" as part of the process set, thus reducing the working capital requiremen...

Abstract

Spot colors reproduce high value brand colors to supplement conventional process colors for printed images and packaging A printing press can utilize hi-fidelity process inks with at least three unique colors and black, and spot colors for printing solid brand colors and for printing over other colors to produce wide-gamut, half-toned color reproductions printing logos on a substrate includes (i) printing the spot colors using spot inks, and (ii) printing the remainder of the image using a substituted original process ink set. Such method can alternatively include (iii) reading the spectral characteristic of the inks, (iv) determining if any color in the image is identified by a color management method from the default process ink set palette, (v) processing the out-of-palette-colors using spot colors and the standard process ink set, and (vi) applying a tone scale value increase (TVI) to the process color sets.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 173,280, filed April 28, 2009. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to multicolor printing technology, and in particular, to methods and systems for multicolor printing using process and spot colors. Background technique [0004] The terms "house color," "spot color," or "brand color" refer to customer-specified, multi-tinted colors that are often associated with a specific product or brand name , for example, the famous Kodak ) the exact shades of red and yellow used in its packaging and advertising. For this reason, brand colors are sometimes referred to as "special colors". [0005] Spot inks are custom blended inks that are formed to match a brand owner's design vision or brand colors. These brand colors are often trademark colors, and in order to maintain the effectiveness of the brand, the colors must be kept withi...
