Embodiment Construction

[0015] One embodiment of the present invention provides a printer having features for sensing properties of a print medium introduced into the printer to receive localized heating and generate a printed image and for automatically adjusting thermal printhead settings to optimize printing on the print medium Image quality means.

[0016] An alternative embodiment of the present invention provides a printer having means for sensing properties of print media introduced into the printer to receive localized heating and generate a printed image and for automatically displaying a message to a user of the printer using, for example, an LED or LCD display The means of , wherein the message relates to the suitability and / or compatibility of print media introduced by the printer.

[0017] Another alternative embodiment of the present invention provides a printer having means for detecting properties of print media introduced into the printer to receive localized heating and generate a p...

Abstract

A method is provided for detecting the type of print media provided to a thermal printer. A printer has a heat source disposed adjacent a temperature sensor to transfer heat upon activation across a portion of an introduced print media to the temperature sensor and a controller to receive a signal from the temperature sensor and to obtain a temperature signature generally identifying attributes of the introduced print media and to adjust print head settings in response to the identified attributes. The printer may further comprise a sensor to detect access to a print media storage compartment and to initiate examination of the heat transfer properties of the introduced print media upon detecting that the print storage compartment has been accessed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to thermal printers and printing media used by thermal printers. Background technique [0002] Printers are used to record and provide printed information and advertisements to consumers using automated teller machines, self-service kiosks, self-service gas pumps, and movie ticket kiosks, as well as to consumers receiving receipts related to purchases of goods and products. Printers are typically loaded with a supply of print media, such as paper, stored in a roll, the exposed end of which is operable to be fed through a channel near the printhead. The printer may include rollers coupled to one or more servo motors controlled by a controller for positioning and advancing print media to receive print information thereon. As the roller draws print media from the roll, the roll of print media is rotated to wind more portions of print media until the roll is exhausted and then replaced with a new roll. The cutter may be posi...
