Embodiment

[0026]510 commercial breed male chicks (Cobb 500) were purchased from a commercial farm. At the time of receipt, the age is about one day. These birds (birds) were divided into test and control groups, 255 birds in each group and housed in 30 pens (pens). The chickens were housed in concrete mini-floor pens (four feet by four feet) in an environmentally controlled facility at approximately 5200 feet above sea level. All chickens are housed in pens containing clean nests. The environmental conditions of the birds (ie floor space, bird density, temperature, light, feeders and water area) were similar for all groups. To avoid chicken migration, check each pen to ensure there are no openings between pens greater than 1 inch up to about 12 inches high. Environmental conditions simulated commercial field conditions. From the 1st to 4th day, the light was 24 hours a day; from the 5th to 43rd day, the light was turned off for 1 hour a day. The light intensity is 1.0 to 1.3 foot-c...

Abstract

Feed supplements for poultry raised using a rapid growth regimen are disclosed herein. The supplements include D-ribose in an amount effective to improve the resistance to cardiomyopathy in the poultry. Methods for feeding poultry are also disclosed herein.

Description

[0001] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application 61 / 208,121, filed February 20, 2009, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0002] Chicken is the main source of animal protein in the human diet in many parts of the world. A desirable source of chicken is broiler chicks, which are young, tender, small birds. [0003] To meet the demand for chickens, broiler chicks are often fed using a rapid growth regimen such that the chickens reach market size in about six weeks. The regimen typically involves feeding broiler chicks a highly nutritious feed that has been specially formulated for rapid growth. The regimen may also include exposing broiler chicks to continuous or near continuous light to motivate the chickens to eat for longer periods of time each day. The regimen may further include exposing broiler chicks to higher temperatures with optional periodic cooling down for cold stress conditioning. [0004] Alt...
