Problems solved by technology

However, the noise reduction scheme is rather complex and relies on edge-preserving filtering
The problem with the use of edge preserving filters (e.g. median filter, bilateral filter, etc.) is that such filters cannot ultimately determine the relationship between noise and actual image detail for details that are not associated with sharp or sharp edges. difference between

Embodiment Construction

[0031] figure 1 An imaging system 100 is shown according to one embodiment of the invention. The imaging system includes: an image sensor 102, a lens system 104, a shutter 106 and an aperture system 108. The lens system 104 is used to focus objects in the scene on the imaging plane of the image sensor. Part (eg RGB) and invisible part (eg infrared) of the light (electromagnetic radiation) enters the aperture of the imaging system. The imaging system may be part of a digital camera, or integrated in a mobile phone, web camera, and another multimedia device requiring image capture functionality.

[0032] Exposure of the image sensor to light is controlled by the shutter and aperture. When the shutter is open, the aperture controls the amount of light and the collimation of light exposing the image sensor. The shutter may be a mechanical shutter or, alternatively, an electronic shutter integrated in the image sensor. The image sensor contains rows and columns of light-sensiti...

Abstract

A method and an imaging system is described for providing a low noise color image. The method comprises the steps of: exposing an image sensor to visible spectral energy and non-visible spectral energy, said image sensor comprising pixels for obtaining first image data associated with said visible spectral energy and pixels for obtaining second image data associated with said non-visible spectral energy; generating first and second image data; subjecting said first image data to a low-pass filter and said second image data to a high-pass filter; and, forming a color image by adding at least part of the high frequency components of said second image data to at least part of the low frequency components of said first image data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to reducing noise in color images and, in particular but not exclusively, to methods and systems for providing low-noise color images, image processing devices and image sensors for use in such systems, and the use of such A computer program product for a method. Background technique [0002] In order to reproduce a color image that matches the real scene as closely as possible, conventional digital cameras use filters such as a color filter array (CFA) inserted between the lens and the image sensor and an infrared blocking filter before the lens. However, using a filter reduces the amount of light reaching the image sensor, thereby substantially reducing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the camera. Furthermore, current trends in digital camera technology, such as increasing sensor resolution by reducing pixel size and desiring improved image quality with higher ISO sensitivity for capturing images in low-light conditio...
