Abstract

An internal combustion engine equipped with: a volume-variable device with which the volume of the combustion chamber is changed by the compression of a gas spring when the combustion chamber pressure reaches the control pressure; a pressure-changing device that changes the pressure of the gas of the gas spring; and a volume-changing device that changes the volume of the compression space whereinthe gas of the gas spring is compressed. The internal combustion engine detects the operating state and performs control such that the pressure of the gas of the gas spring is decreased and the volume of the compression space is reduced as the combustion rate of the fuel in the combustion chamber increases.
