Problems solved by technology

[0030] It is also important to note that simple service bundling - for example, voice, video and data services in a unified package with a single bill - is usually offered at a lower price than equivalent services offered separately, making it beneficial in the long run. Reduced average revenue per user (ARPU) for service providers

Embodiment approach -

[0435] now refer to Figures 12 to 30 , which shows and describes various aspects of one exemplary IMS-based implementation of the packetized content delivery network architecture of the present invention and in more detail. It should be appreciated that while the following embodiments are described in terms of known IMS technology, the use of this technology is by no means a requirement to practice the broader principles of the invention previously described herein. Rather, IMS is but one of several possible existing packet-based multimedia technologies that can be leveraged within this invention to provide many of its services and functions, including service integration.

[0436] Two main components are associated with the exemplary IMS-based implementation described herein: (i) IMS (IP Multimedia System), and (ii) Service Delivery Platform (SDP). Each of these components and their interrelationships with each other (as well as the other components of the packet-based netw...

example -

[0589] now refer to Figure 17 , the following example illustrates service registration, discovery and control in the context of a SIP-based UE within a typical IPTV architecture.

[0590] In this exemplary architecture, IMS is used for IPTV service registration, service discovery and IPTV session control. SIP / SDP is used on Gm, ISC and y2 interfaces. HTTP, DVBSTP or FLUTE can be used on the Xa interface, and the protocol on the Ut interface is HTTP. Streaming control is performed using RTSP / SDP on the Xc interface, and IGMP is used on the Xd interface. The Diameter protocol (a computer networking protocol derived from the Radius protocol for authentication, authorization, and accounting) is used on the e2, Gq', Cx, Sh interfaces of the illustrated embodiment, but other protocols and interface.

[0591] The communication between user equipment and SDF relies on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SUBSCRIBE and NOTIFY methods. The user equipment may acquire knowledge of the ...

Embodiment approach

[0890] a. implementation plan - The following embodiments serve as illustrations (but are not exhaustive) of various instances where network operator (eg, MSO) subscribers or users will access content.

[0891] 1. Implementation Scenario 1 - "Managed" Network - Premises with Open IPTV Forum Compatible Gateway

[0892] Devices connected to the premises gateway may or may not have an IMS client process. OIPF compliant gateways include IMS enabled gateways 812 . If the device has an IMS client, the IMS-enabled gateway acts as a proxy. If not, the gateway translates the UPNP or HTTP request into a SEP request and forwards the request to the MSO IMS network.

Abstract

Methods and apparatus for delivering packetized content (eg, video, audio, data, etc.) over a content delivery network are disclosed. In one embodiment, the content is packetized using the Internet Protocol IP and delivered by the service provider to the provider's subscribers over both managed and unmanaged networks for any Delivery is provided at any time, at any location, and via any designated user device. The delivered content may originate from the service provider, a third party content source (eg, a network or studio), the subscriber itself, or other sources including the Internet. Using common control and service functions within the network provides the ability to integrate or fuse services together, thereby providing new services and economic opportunities for the service providers and subscribers. Content delivery sessions may also be migrated from one device to another. The invention also discloses a network-based user interface infrastructure and a gateway-based client-side architecture.
