Abstract

By utilizing previous channel estimates and the temporal correlation of channel responses, the required bit rate for reporting channel state information from network transceivers to the network is significantly reduced while maintaining the fidelity of the channel estimates. For a selected set of subcarriers, the transceiver estimates a channel frequency response from the pilot signal. The transceiver also predicts the frequency response for each selected subcarrier by multiplying a state vector containing previous frequency response estimates with a coefficient vector containing linear prediction coefficients. The predicted frequency response is subtracted from the estimated frequency response, and the prediction error is quantized and communicated to the network. For each selected subcarrier, the network maintains a corresponding state vector and prediction coefficient vector and also predicts the frequency response. The received prediction error is inverse quantized and subtracted from the predicted frequency response to produce a frequency response corresponding to the frequency response estimated at the transceiver.
