Abstract

The invention relates to a piston construction for an opposed-piston engine comprising a corrugated end surface of the piston crown and an articulation of said piston to the piston rod. The shape of each piston crown comprises a bowl with adjoining ridges projecting axially from said piston. A cooling arrangement for the piston includes an outer gallery extending around the inner surface of the piston sidewall near the crown. The outer gallery surrounds and is in fluid communication with a central gallery adjacent the deepest portion of the bowl. The outer corridor has an asymmetric profile that is elevated below the ridge and slopes upwardly below the peripheral portion of the bowl. The mechanism for coupling the piston to the piston rod comprises a dual axis plain bearing.
