[0028] figure 1 A conventional blast furnace exhaust system with standard side inlet swirlers is shown. The cyclone 1 has a substantially cylindrical body and also comprises an inlet duct 2 with a region 3 , which enters the body 4 tangentially by means of a bend 5 . Gas from the top 6 of the blast furnace enters the exhaust system 7 , passes through the downcomer 8 , optionally passes through the isolation valve 9 a , enters the cyclone 1 and exits the cyclone through the outlet 10 . With a single inlet, it may be difficult to properly transfer all loads from the discharge pipe and downcomer fitted with isolation valves and expansion joints to the cyclone. Another problem with the side inlet to the cyclone is that this limits how close the cyclone can be to the furnace. This therefore causes problems associated with retrofitting cyclones with side inlets to existing installations. Furthermore, the swirler itself would be loaded unevenly with the side inlets, so an axial ar...
