Embodiment Construction

[0050] Reference is now made to the Figures, wherein, for the sake of clarity, the depicted components are not necessarily shown to scale, and wherein the same or similar components are designated by the same reference numerals throughout the views.

[0051] turn to image 3 , an example of a router 200 according to an embodiment of the invention can be seen. As shown, communication between line cards 202-1 through 202-N is provided by wireless millimeter wave links (ie, between 100 GHz and 10 THz) instead of by "long range" SerDes links. Each of the cards 202-1 through 202-N is secured in a chassis 206 (which is part of a router chassis 208). The chassis 206 can power each of the cards 202-1 through 202-N and can provide control from a processor (ie, the controller 102 of FIG. 1). Each of the cards 102-1 through 102-N is capable of providing multiple transmit and receive links to its adjacent line cards. Additionally, a waveguide (or multiple waveguides) may be included wit...

Abstract

Traditional routers have wired backplanes that use "long-distance" serializer / deserializer (SerDes) links, but this type of architecture is complex, costly, and uses a lot of power. To solve these problems, a new wireless backplane architecture is presented here. This wireless backplane replaces traditional wired switch fabrics with direct mmWave links between line cards.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a router, and more particularly to a router with a wireless switching mechanism. Background technique [0002] Turning to Figures 1 and 2, a diagram of an example of a conventional router 100 can be seen. The router 100 is typically housed within a chassis that includes a wired switch fabric 104 (usually linked by "long distance" serializer / deserializers (SerDes)) controlled by a controller 102 . These "long-distance" SerDes links can be several feet in length, are structurally complex, and consume a lot of power. Line cards 108-1 through 108-N are coupled (via slots 106-1 through 106-N) to this switch fabric 104 (part of the "backplane" of router 100). These line cards 108-1 through 108-2 (designated 108 in FIG. 2 for simplicity) generally include an organization interface 110 in communication with the organization 104 through slots 106-1 through 106-N (designated 106 in FIG. 2 for simplicity). and a plura...
