Abstract

The present invention discloses methods and apparatus for dynamically sharing resources, such as radio frequency (RF) spectrum, in a wireless system. In one embodiment, the sharing is between multiple base stations (eg, eNodeBs or access points (APs)) or between different radio access technologies. In one implementation, this sharing is accomplished by reserving new RF carriers and temporarily assigning (and releasing) one or more RF carriers to a multi-carrier capable radio access system or base station. Such dynamic spectrum sharing allows opportunistic use of additional RF carriers in a multi-carrier system, rather than being permanently available to the eNodeB or AP regardless of active use of the additional RF carriers.
