Embodiment Construction

[0047] A patient requiring a therapeutic gas such as oxygen may typically be administered the therapeutic gas via a device such as a face mask or nasal cannula. The device is usually connected to an air source via flexible plastic tubing, and the administration can take place in a home or clinical setting.

[0048] Therapeutic gas supply lines from the gas source to the patient typically comprise flexible plastic tubing such as polyethylene or similar plastic material.

[0049] figure 1 is a perspective view of a flameproof connector suitable for insertion into a typical gas supply line according to one embodiment. figure 1 The flameproof medical gas connector 10 shown in is suitable for use with flexible tubing supplying medical gases capable of combusting or capable of supporting combustion. The coupler 10 generally comprises an elongated body having an opening 20 in the region of each end. The opening shown is connected by conduit 30 ( figure 1 not shown). A valve asse...

Abstract

The valve is fitted in a medical pressurised gas supply to a mask or nasal cannula commonly used in the home for patients requiring oxygen. The valve 130 includes thermally activated fuse members 220 which degrade in the event of fire or ignition of the gas and allows closure of the valve. The valve is housed within an elongate body 100 with a nozzle portion and central portion 110. The fuse member 220 may take the form of a lip, inwardly projection rim or thermally fusible stop and is formed of a material which is sensitive to heat and softens at ignition temperatures of a supplied gas. Degradation of the fuse member allows the elongate valve member 130 to be pushed out of the nozzle by means of biasing means, such as a spring (not shown), and allowing O-ring seal 240 to engage with shoulder 145 thereby shutting off fluid flow.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a flameproof medical gas coupling for use with flexible tubing supplying combustible or capable of supporting combustion medical gas and a method of forming such a flameproof coupling. Background technique [0002] Patients requiring therapeutic gases such as oxygen may typically be administered the therapeutic gases via devices such as face masks or nasal cannulae. The device is usually connected to an air source via flexible plastic tubing, and the administration can take place in a home or clinical setting. [0003] It has been determined that the fire risk may be substantial when such delivery devices are used with, for example, oxygen, oxygen-enriched air, or any medical gas capable of supporting combustion, since exposure of the delivery device to a fire event may result in combustion. A flame that begins as an external fire supported by combustible gas leaking from the conveying device can then move from the con...
