Embodiment Construction

[0014] see Figure 1-4 , the variable speed belt transmission 10 includes a housing 12 that rotatably supports a transmission shaft 14 . The fixed pulley 16 is mounted to the end of the drive shaft 14 , for example by bolts 18 . The fixed pulley 16 is thus mounted to rotate together with the transmission shaft 14 . The movable sheave 20 is mounted for axial movement relative to the transmission shaft 14 . The movable sheave 20 rotatably houses the propeller shaft 14 .

[0015] best as Figure 4 and 7 As seen in , the fixed sheave 16 includes a central hub 22 having a bolt receiving hole 23 extending therethrough and a belt engaging flange 24 surrounding the hub 22 . Hub 22 includes an outer ring 26 . A plurality, preferably six, of spaced apart drive fingers 28 project axially from the ring 26 and towards the movable sheave 20 .

[0016] best as figure 2 , 3 , 5 and 6, the movable sheave 20 includes a hollow axially extending central hub 30 and a belt engaging flange...

Abstract

A variable speed drive assembly comprising a rotatable drive shaft, a fixed sheave fixed relative to the drive shaft and mounted for rotation therewith, and a movable pulley mounted for axial movement relative to the drive shaft. A plurality of drive fingers project axially from a pulley. A plurality of recesses are formed in the other pulley. Each drive finger is movably received by a corresponding one of the recesses. A load-carrying member is interposed between the drive finger and the other pulley. The load bearing member includes a plurality of load bearing fingers. Each carrying finger is positioned between a drive finger and a wall of a corresponding one of the recesses.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to a variable speed transmission mechanism. Background technique [0002] The current variable speed fan transmission generally includes a fixed pulley and a movable pulley connected to the drive shaft through a spline. The splined coupling must be lubricated with oil or grease. The translational movement of the components makes it difficult to contain the lubricant with the seal. Lubricant leakage causes premature spline wear, and lubricant leakage onto the V-belt causes premature belt wear. [0003] US Patent No. 4,378,221 issued March 1983 to Huff et al. shows a torque cam assembly for a variable speed belt drive having fixed and axially slidable pulleys. A collar is mounted on the drive shaft and has a plurality of cams thereon, and a cam follower having a generally axially protruding member is mounted on the slidable pulley for engagement with the cams on the collar. Abradable elements on the member contact cams ...
