Embodiment Construction

[0060] In one embodiment, the present invention may be a distributed cable modem termination system (CMTS) for a hybrid fiber optic cable (HFC) network. Such a system will typically consist of multiple parts.

[0061] In some embodiments, the system will operate substantially independently of the CMTS at the cabling facility, and will essentially serve to supplement the functionality of the prior art CMTS by adding a minimal amount of new equipment at the cabling facility. Here, this new equipment at the cabling will consist primarily of a tier 2 / 3 switch, a virtual rack management system (to be described), and appropriate MAC and PHY devices to send and receive data along the fiber . The prior art cable facility CMTS continues to operate as before, with one difference that the cable operator should provide some empty channels to make room for the new channels provided by the present invention.

[0062] In other embodiments, parts of the system will be embedded in an advance...

Abstract

The invention relates to a distributed-type cable modem terminal system. The system is used for a distributed-type CMTS (cable modem terminal system) device which serves HFC CATV networks of a plurality of adjacent regions through a plurality of independent cables. A plurality of QAM modems which are used for providing data for the plurality of independent cables are disposed between a plurality of QAM modems located at a cable facility and a plurality of remote QAM modems ideally located at a plurality of optical fiber nodes. The system can employ one first optical fiber to transmit a group of basic CATV QAM data waveforms to the nodes, and also can employ one substitute optical fiber or substitute optical fiber frequency. Moreover, the system can freely employ protocols, such as an Ethernet protocol to enable a second group of IP / required data to be transmitted to the nodes. The nodes extract the dedicated data of each adjacent region, and enable the data to be injected into a plurality of untapped QAM channels, thereby improving the data transmission rate through finer granularity.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of an invention patent application with the application number of 201180015258.3, the application date of March 19, 2011, and the invention name of "distributed cable modem terminal system". Background technique [0002] Originally introduced in the late 1940s as a way to transmit television signals over coaxial cables to houses located in areas of poor reception, cable television (CATV) has been modified and expanded over the years, allowing cable media to deliver continuous An increasing number of different types of digital data, including both digital television and broadband Internet data. [0003] One of the most important improvements occurred in the 1990s, when a large number of major electronics and cable operator companies working through Cablelabs (Cablelabs, a non-profit R&D association) introduced the Data over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). First introduced in the late 1990s as DOCSIS version 1.0...
