In one embodiment, a user requests that multimedia content, including video and audio components, be streamed to a personal computer or other user device. For example, a user may play a music video using a media streaming website accessed through a browser running on the user's computer. In many cases, however, a user may simultaneously access multiple streams of multimedia content. For example, if the browser is a tabbed browser, the user can open a new tab and play another multimedia stream in the new tab. In this case, the first browser tab of the website playing the original media stream is minimized or transitioned to the background, and the new multimedia stream is active in the current tab.
