Provided is a desktop icon display system and method applied to terminal equipment. The terminal equipment comprises a display screen and a memory used for storing multiple application programs. The method comprises following steps: generating three-dimensional thumbnail icons of various application programs having first preset height on a desktop displayed by a display screen; monitoring whether various application programs are used nor not in a real-time manner and counting the usage frequency of various application programs within the pre-set time period; calculating the ratios between the usage frequency of various application programs accounting and usage frequency of all application programs; and renewing display heights of three-dimensional thumbnail icons of various application programs based on ratios usage frequency of all application programs.The desktop icon display system and method have following beneficial effects: by displaying three-dimensional thumbnail icons in different heights, usage habits of users can directly shown, thus bringing convenience for the users to rapidly search and use commonly-used application programs.
