Preferred roaming list and system select feature

The System Select feature provides user selectable modes of operation in a mobile communication station, which allow certain fall-back options when a preferred system may not be available, but still steers the bulk of the system selection operations to preferred systems. In a first user selected mode, the mobile station scans for a broadcast system identifier or "SID" that matches an identifier of a preferred system stored in memory of the station. The second mode allows the user at least one option, which involves selection of a less than preferred system, but with this mode, the mobile station will still make a first attempt to register with a system having a SID matching one stored in memory of the station. A preferred implementation offers the user four system selection options. Options based on stored identifiers include an option to select only the home system, and an option to select from a preferred roaming list (PRL) if the home system is unavailable. In the other two options, if the scanning operations for the home system and systems on the PRL are ineffective, one option involves scanning a band corresponding to that used by the home system. In contrast, the other option involves scanning a band other than that used by the home system. The System Select programming, however, limits the operation in the last optional setting, for example to a set time period or until completion of one call. The preferred embodiment facilitates a substantially one-rate service, where the service provider charges the one rate for all calls through the home system, all systems on the PRL list and any system found during a scan of the home-system band.

Method and apparatus for multimedia data interchange with pacing capability in a distributed data processing system

A method and apparatus for efficient multimedia data interchange which utilizes multimedia pacing in a distributed data processing system. During a multimedia communications session, each of a plurality of receiving stations transmits multimedia pacing requests to a sending station at negotiated set time intervals. The multimedia pacing request includes information on the availability of current storage for multimedia data at the receiving station, a minimum data time remaining in storage in the receiving station and other information pertaining to the interchange of the multimedia data. The sending station then allocates various priorities to the transmission of data to the plurality of receiving stations in an order indicative of the type of data, i.e. multimedia or non-multimedia, and the information in the multimedia pacing request pertaining to the minimum data time remaining in storage at the receiving station. In addition, the sending station periodically determines the availability of the transmission queue. When the transmission queue is not readily available, the sending station transfers only high priority multimedia data to the transmission queue; however when the transmission queue is available, the sending station transfers lower priority multimedia data to the transmission queue as well. The sending station can then supply a plurality of receiving stations with significant multimedia data in advance when the communications interface is not overloaded.

Composition for controlling wellbore fluid and gas invasion and method for using same

The disclosure is directed to a composition for controlling wellbore fluid and gas invasion including methods for using said composition. The composition of the invention is a flowable slurry preferably comprising about 70 to 30% by weight of magnesium oxychloride and about 70 to 30% by weight of water. The composition is a flowable slurry at composition temperatures below about 60° C. and sets to form a substantially solid mass upon reaching a composition temperature of about 60-68° C. The phase transition is rapid, thereby limiting or avoiding formation of gel states which contribute to incomplete wellbore seals. The rapid set of the slurry further avoids invasive contamination of earthen formations surrounding the wellbore. The composition has a near-linear relationship between the time required for the phase transition to occur and the composition temperature at which the phase transition occurs. This advantageous property permits the composition set time to be accurately determined and modified as required through the addition of accelerators and inhibitors. The phase transition occurs predictably at high pressures typical of those encountered in wellbore operations. Additives may be included to modify the properties of the composition. The method includes use of the composition to control the loss of fluids and gases from the wellbore.

Ignition system with driver identification

System and method for positively identifying an operator through biometric means which shall prevent unauthorized or impaired operation of a motor vehicle by requiring the potential operator to sequentially energize several vehicle devices, within a set time period, prior to placing the vehicle ignition into a start position. The system includes a device for measuring an operator's biometric identification, and a microcontroller. Logic outputs from the sequencing mechanism and the timer mechanism are contained within the microcontroller operating as a logic decoder that is used to control the vehicle ignition circuit. The microcontroller monitors the sequence in which the vehicle's devices are energized, and if they are energized within the correct order and within the predetermined amount of time then the microcontroller will output a signal to allow the ignition circuit to close. A sensory indicator may alert the potential operator as to the condition of the microcontroller output. An unauthorized user is inhibited from operating the motor vehicle because their identification could not be biometrically established and/or the performance sequence is unknown to him/her. Slower reflex times or impaired motor skills may also prevent an impaired operator from performing the proper sequence within the predetermined time period.
