Device for detecting that a motor vehicle is driving over a poor road surface, comprising: means for receiving signals pertaining to the rotational speed (omega ij) of the wheels which signals come from wheel rotational speed sensors for each wheel, and processing means (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15) for applying band-pass filtering to the signals received in order to isolate the low-frequency components representing the low-frequency noise present in the signals received so as to calculate the maximum value (omega max (f)) of the rotational speed signals thus filtered (omega ij (f)), representing the maximum value of the low-frequency noise for all the wheels, in order to threshold said maximum value with respect to a threshold (S1) and to detect the start of a situation of driving over a poor road surface having counted a pre-defined number of times that said maximum value (omega max (f)) crosses the threshold (S1) over a predetermined running distance and without the wheel slipping.
