However, the Fiber Channel Protocol (FCP) is generally not suitable for distances greater than 10 km, although the distance limit can be extended by adopting a conversion to TCP / IP communication, but the conversion is subject to the above-mentioned performance considerations

Embodiment Construction

[0078] Briefly, embodiments of the present specification relate to a bridge comprising a first transmitter interface and a second transmitter interface. Each transmitter interface is configured to transmit data over a respective communication path comprising one (or advantageously more than one) logical connections. Each interface has a respective transmit buffer configured to store data packets for transmission over the respective communication path. One or more path capability determination modules (eg, artificial intelligence modules) determine a measure of the capability of each of the communication paths to transmit data. The dispatcher uses this information along with a measure of the amount of data stored in the send buffers to determine which send buffer will receive the next packet from the input buffer. In particular, if the path consists of more than two logical connections, the size of the packet provided to the send buffer can be much larger than the size of the ...

Abstract

An apparatus comprises: first and second transmitter interfaces (702, 711), each configured to transmit data over a respective communications path (702, 703) including one or more logical connections; first and second transmit buffers forming part of the first and second transmitter interfaces respectively, the first and second transmit buffers being configured to store packets of data for transmission over their respective communication path; one or more path capability determining modules (709, 713) configured to determine a measure of capability of each of the communications paths to transmit data; an input data buffer (706) configured to store data for provision to the first and second transmit buffers for subsequent transmission; and a data handling module (704) configured to respond to determining the presence of data in the input buffer for transmission by: using the measured capabilities of the communication paths and measures of the quantity of data stored in the transmit buffers to select one of the first and second transmitter interfaces for transmitting data; and providing at least one packet of data to the transmit buffer of the selected one of the first and second transmitter interfaces.

Description

technical field [0001] This description relates to transferring data between a first network node and a second network node. Background technique [0002] The rate at which data can be transferred between network nodes using conventional methods is limited by several factors. In order to limit network congestion and ensure reliable transmission, the first node is allowed to send only a limited amount of data before receiving an acknowledgment message (ACK) from the second receiving node. Once the ACK message has been received by the first node, a second limited amount of data can be sent to the second node. [0003] In Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) systems, this limited amount of data is related to the amount of data that can be stored in the receive buffer of the second node and is called TCP / IP "receive window". [0004] In conventional systems, the size of the TCP / IP window can be set by taking into account the round trip time between the fi...
