example 1

[0043] figure 1 An example of a program viewing display screen 150 is shown in which the current program 154 is being displayed in full screen mode (ie, where the window of the current program 154 being displayed occupies substantially the entire display area). In the illustrated example, display screen 150 is generally rectangular in shape and may be defined by bottom edge 156 , top edge 158 , left edge 160 , and right edge 162 , all defined relative to a viewer's viewing angle.

[0044] While watching the current program 154, the user may initiate a channel change operation. For example, a user may press a "Channel +" or "Channel -" button on a remote control unit associated with the user device, or may press a channel change button or an on-screen menu on the user device.

[0045] figure 2 Shown is an example of a display state 200 in which, in response to a channel change command, the display screen 150 is updated so that the current program 154 is now presented in a wi...

[0063] refer to Figure 8 , Figure 9 , Figure 10 , Figure 11 , Figure 12 , Figure 13 , Figure 14 , Figure 15 , Figure 16 and Figure 17 , discloses an example embodiment in which the user issues multiple channel change commands before completing the first channel change.

[0064] As mentioned earlier, Figure 8 Depicted is a display state 800 where a channel change has been completed. Assume that the user selects the "Channel-" button once.

[0065] Figure 9 An intermediate display state 900 is shown in which the window 902 is being resized to a smaller area, while secondary programs or advertisements are visible in the remaining area on the display screen 150 .

Abstract

Improved user premises equipment enhances the channel change experience. In response to a channel+ or channel- command, the currently displayed program is resized to fit within the smaller program window. In the display area exposed due to the resizing of the currently displayed program, additional content is displayed, such as advertisements or channel change progress information. In the windows organized in vertical alignment with the program windows of the currently displayed program, additional program windows presenting snapshots of content from the program(s) up and the program(s) down may be displayed. The program window is driven or scrolled in such a direction that the program window of the next program desired by the user replaces the program window of the currently displayed program. The program window for the next program is then resized to occupy the entire display screen.

Description

technical field [0001] This patent document relates to the presentation of digital video programming and, in one aspect, to the user experience during channel changes of the programming. Background technique [0002] Digital video delivery systems provide improved video quality over conventional analog video delivery systems, among other benefits. Changing the user experience in a program or television channel is an important aspect of the quality parameter in digital video delivery systems. However, channel change times in some existing digital video delivery systems tend to be longer than channel change times in analog delivery systems. Contents of the invention [0003] Techniques for controlling on-screen display of content during a channel change are disclosed. In some embodiments, prior to a user-initiated channel change, the current program may be displayed across the entire display area. When a channel change request is received, the display size of the current ...
