Robotic apparatus

A robotic apparatus has eight actuators (M0-M7) and a linkage (LINK 0-LINK 5) that actuates an end effector. Three serial macro freedoms have large ranges of motion and inertias. Four serial micro freedoms have small ranges of motion and inertias. Translation of the end effector in an y direction is actuated by at least one micro joint and at least one macro joint. The apparatus can be part of a master and slave combination, providing force feedback without any explicit force sensors. The slave is controlled with an Inverse Jacobian controller, and the mater with a Jacobian Transpose controller. A slave having more degrees of freedom (DOFs) than the master can be controlled. A removable effector unit actuates its DOFs with cables. Beating heart surgery can be accomplished by commanding the slave to move with a beating heart and cancelling out any such motion in the motions perceived by the master.

Apparatus and method for registering two medical images

An embodiment of the invention provides a method and apparatus for registering two medical images with one another. A first medical image including a representation of a biological organ of a subject or for a population is obtained and the surface of the organ is identified in the first medical image. The identified surface is then used to construct a 3D geometric surface model of the organ. The geometric model is used to derive a motion model that incorporates information on the physical material properties of the organ and external forces that cause the organ to move and deform. A second medical image including a representation of the organ of the subject (or another subject, in the case that the first medical image is an atlas image) is obtained and an alignment is determined between a first surface normal vector field for the organ surface, derived from the geometric model, and a second surface normal vector field for the organ surface, derived by filtering the second medical image. The alignment accommodates deformation of the geometric model in accordance with the motion predicted by the motion model. The first and second medical images can then be registered with one another based on said determined model-to-image vector alignment (MIVA).

Efficient Method For Inversion of Geophysical Data

A method for efficient inversion of measured geophysical data from a subsurface region to prospect for hydrocarbons. Gathers of measured data (40) are encoded (60) using a set of non-equivalent encoding functions (30). Then all data records in each encoded gather that correspond to a single receiver are summed (60), repeating for each receiver to generate a simultaneous encoded gather (80). The method employs iterative, local optimization of a cost function to invert the encoded gathers of simultaneous source data. An adjoint method is used to calculate the gradients of the cost function needed for the local optimization process (100). The inverted data yields a physical properties model (110) of the subsurface region that, after iterative updating, can indicate presence of accumulations of hydrocarbons.

Lagrange quality of service routing

A method for practical QoS routing, which provides a solution to the delay constrained least cost routing problem, is presented. The method uses the concept of aggregated costs and finds the optimal multiplier based on Lagrange relaxation. The method is polynomial in running time, and produces a theoretical lower bound (i.e. optimal solution), along with the result. The differences between the lower bound and result are small, indicating the quality of the result. Additionally, by further relaxing the desire for an optimal solution, an option is provided to control the trade-off between running time of the algorithm and quality of the result.

Method, system and computer program for managing test processes based on customized UML diagrams

A method for facilitating the management of a test process is proposed. For this purpose, the different test scenarios included in the process and their execution dependencies are represented by means of a customized UML activity diagram (300a). An execution weight is also associated with each test scenario (for example, defined by the man-hours required for its execution). In this way, it is possible to identify critical test scenarios (315g), which may impair the execution of the whole test process when they fail (because many other test scenarios depend on their successful completion). The order of execution of the test scenarios is then arranged into a test plan, so as to minimize the time required to reach the critical test scenarios. Preferably, the same process is repeated whenever any runtime condition changes (such when a test scenario fails).
