[0023] review

[0024] Generally, a digital surveillance system includes multiple cameras connected to a monitoring station. Monitoring stations store video received from multiple cameras. A monitoring station allows received video streams to be sent to one or more connected clients for monitoring. The camera can be an analog or digital camera connected to an encoder that sends an encoded stream of video at a specific resolution to the monitoring station. The camera may further comprise an Internet Protocol (IP) camera including an encoder for streaming the encoded video at a specific resolution over an IP network to a monitoring station.

[0025] In order to reduce the storage size and network bandwidth required for streaming encoded video, various possible encoding / compression formats may be used whether the encoder is incorporated into the camera or separate from the camera when encoding the video. Commonly used formats in the surveillance industry include JPEG, MPEG-2...

Abstract

A computer-implemented method for managing data received from a video source device is disclosed. At least a first storage layer and a second storage layer on the storage medium are identified for respectively storing different types of data. When a data stream is received from a video source, the data is associated with at least a first storage tier or a second storage tier and data from the received stream is stored in the associated storage tier. When the storage medium is full or meets some other specified maximum capacity threshold, data whose age exceeds one or more specified maximum retention times is initially removed from the first storage tier and data from the second storage tier One or both of the layers are removed.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit under 35 U.S.C. § 119(e) of U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 14 / 568077, filed December 11, 2014, U.S. Nonprovisional Patent Application No. 14 / 568077 The application claims the benefit under 35 USC § 119(e) of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 927923, filed January 15, 2014, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to managing storage of streaming data from video source devices. Background technique [0004] In a typical video surveillance system, one or more cameras may be communicatively coupled to a server system. When video data is recorded by a camera, it is forwarded to a server system where it is stored for subsequent retrieval. A client system is communicatively coupled to the server system and operable to request and receive recorded video data streams. [0005] V...
