Problems solved by technology

[0003] Typical encoder constructions, such as that disclosed in the '813 patent, rely on illuminated gratings with fixed pitches, so that interchangeable illuminated section components cannot be utilized for different pitches of the illuminated gratings

Embodiment Construction

[0012] figure 1 is a partially schematic exploded view, in various embodiments, of a prior art optical encoder configuration 100 that operates according to the known "self-imaging" principle. Certain aspects of the encoder configuration 100 are similar to the encoder configuration described in the '813 patent and can be understood by analogy. like figure 1 As shown, the encoder configuration 100 includes a scale grating 110 , an illumination portion 160 and a detector configuration 125 . The illumination part 160 includes a light source 130 , a lens 140 and an illumination grating 150 . The scale grating 110 is separated from the illumination portion 160 by a source gap distance Zs. The detector configuration 125 is separated from the scale grating 110 by a distance Zi. In some embodiments, light source 130 is an LED.

Abstract

An array of light sources for use in an illumination portion of an optical encoder is disclosed. The optical encoder includes an illumination portion, a scale grating extending in a measurement direction and receiving light from the illumination portion, and a detector arrangement. The light source array includes individual sources arranged in a grid pattern and coincident with two transverse sets of parallel grid pattern lines having between their parallel lines two Different grid line spacing. Different instances of the light source array may be mounted in different rotational orientations about an axis orthogonal to the grating pattern for use in different illumination sections, adapted for use with corresponding graduated gratings having different grating pitches along the measurement axis. By using different respective rotational orientations, the individual sources are aligned along respective illumination source lines, which are separated by different respective illumination source line spacings along the measurement axis.

Description

technical field [0001] This application relates generally to precision measuring instruments, and more particularly to optical displacement encoders. Background technique [0002] Various optical displacement encoders are known that use a read head with optics that image a scale pattern onto a photodetector device in the read head. The image of the scale pattern is displaced in cooperation with the scale member, and the movement or position of the displaced image of the scale pattern is detected by the photodetector means. An optical encoder may utilize a self-imaging device to detect displacement of a scale member comprising a scale grating. The article "FourierImages: I-The Point Source" by Cowley, J.M. and A.F. Moodie in Proc. Phys. Soc. B, 70, 486, 1957 describes the fundamentals of self-images (also known as Talbot images), which The article is incorporated herein by reference.
