Embodiment Construction

[0021] A stud or other substructure detector according to aspects of the invention may include components for performing conventional stud detection methods (eg, electromagnetic, magnetic, capacitive, acoustic and radar systems) as well as IR imaging devices. The IR imaging device may comprise any suitable detectors for detecting infrared radiation from the target scene, eg arranged in a detector array. A stud finder may include any combination of features typically found on a conventional stud finder, including but not limited to: a drive mechanism to activate the stud detection assembly, a sensitivity adjustment device to adjust the sensitivity of the stud detection assembly , one or more lights for indicating the presence or absence of a stud to the user, and a speaker for generating a tone to warn the user of the presence or absence of the stud. The stud finder may include a display configured to display IR image data generated by the IR imaging device to allow a user to v...

Abstract

The means for detecting an underlying structure, such as behind a wall surface, may include a first sensor, such as an electromagnetic sensor, configured to generate data indicative of the location of the underlying structure. The tool may include an indicator that provides an indication to the user based on the data. The tool may additionally or alternatively include an infrared imaging device for generating infrared image data indicative of a heat map of the scene. A display can display the generated infrared image data. The underlying structure can be visualized in a heatmap of the scene. The tool may indicate to the operator the presence of the underlying structural feature via one or both of a display and an indicator.

Description

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 068,397, filed October 24, 2014, and entitled "UNDERLYING WALL STRUCTURE FINDERAND INFRARED CAMERA," which is hereby incorporated by reference Its contents are incorporated in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Determining the position of underlying objects behind walls is useful in a variety of applications. For example, detecting the position of a stud behind a wall surface allows locating and utilizing the structural support provided by the stud without destroying the wall or performing error-prone estimates. However, depending on the materials and techniques used during construction of the structure, traditional stud finders may often provide incorrect readings. For various reasons, such errors can lead to false positive detections or miss studs overall. Contents of the invention [0004] Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to methods and appa...
