The system comprises a PC terminal, a RS485 converter and a plurality of terminals; the PC terminal is connected with the RS485 converter; each terminal comprises at least one display screen and a preset memory; each terminal is communicated with the RS485 converter and the PC terminal; the PC terminal sends a screen display instruction to each terminal, and the screen display instruction is stored in the preset memory; the preset memory is provided with a register and a video memory; the video memory stores display information of the current display screen; and the register stores the next screen display instruction of the display screen. The present invention further relates to a background extension method based on the RS485 bus. The method and system for the background extension based on the RS485 bus dexterously divide memory spaces in the memory and employ independent arrangement of the register and the video memory to greatly simplify the background extension flow based on the RS485 bus and allow the display to perform diversification display, and the repeat display program firing does not need dismounting so as to satisfy background real-time updating requirement and facilitate maintenance and upgrading of the whole system.
