Problems solved by technology

Although CSI-RS results in small overhead, the interval may be too large in the time domain to train the frequency tracking loop
CSI-RS may also lead to aliased channel energy response in long delay spread channels

Abstract

Systems and techniques are disclosed herein to reduce pilot overhead by providing a common reference signal encoded with cover codes that are orthogonal in the time and frequency domains. A common reference signal encoded by cover codes that are orthogonal in both domains can be despread in both time and frequency domains for improved resolution and larger capture windows. Semi-uniform pilot spacing in both frequency and time domains can be utilized. In the time domain, the first pair of pilot symbols is spaced apart by a first time interval, and the second pair of pilot symbols is spaced apart from the first pair of pilot symbols by a second time interval, the second time interval being greater than the first time interval. In the frequency domain, the first set of pilot symbols is densely placed in the selected frequency band, and the second set of pilot symbols is sparsely placed to surround and include the selected frequency band.
