Abstract

The invention provides a method and a device for indexing an ARP list item. The method comprises the steps of: determining a state identifier corresponding to an IP address to be resolved when determining that the received IP address to be resolved is not successfully resolved; determining a second index value for the IP address to be resolved from at least one preset first index values based on the state identifier, wherein the second index value is identical with a preset third index value in an ARP list; determining a preset processing action based on the second index value and the ARP list, wherein the ARP list records the preset processing action corresponding to the third index value; and processing the IP address to be resolved based on the preset processing action. By applying the method and the device provided by the invention, the number of newly-created ARP list item is greatly reduced, the ARP list item resources are efficiently utilized, and the forwarding efficiency of a switch is improved.
