Abstract

The present disclosure relates to optimized transmission of prioritized data in radio access technology networks. Delays in IMS call setup and other time-critical data transfers can be reduced by finding alternative transfer methods for time-critical data when the transfer cannot be completed or the radio access technology is not available. A critical service manager ("CSM") receives and evaluates priority information about a given data transfer. By evaluating this priority information, the CSM can identify priority data or data that cannot tolerate delay, such as IMS calls or emergency calls. In cases where the network rejects the connection request and issues a wait timer, the CSM reduces the number of retransmissions to speed up permanent transmission failures. In the event of a permanent transfer failure, the CSM can determine an alternative protocol for transferring priority data, such as transferring data via CS fallback, via Wi‑Fi, or via another legacy RAT.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments described herein relate generally to the transmission of IP Multimedia Subsystem data. Background technique [0002] In systems with multilayer architectures (such as those under the Open Systems Interconnection model ("OSI")), where data transmission occurs in packets, such as Radio Link Control ("RLC") and Media Access Control ( A data link layer such as "MAC") has no knowledge of the type of data being transmitted. Thus, even for IP Multimedia Subsystem ("IMS") and other high priority data, the data link layer follows conventional retransmission mechanisms. However, some data are time-critical. For more time-critical data such as IMS call setup, the use of conventional retransmission mechanisms may result in call setup delays, poor user experience, or call failure. [0003] In cases where a radio access technology ("RAT") is not available to transmit time-critical data, the data plane bearers will typically not get notified that the R...
