Abstract

The present disclosure discusses a compound cycle engine having at least one rotary unit defining an internal combustion engine, a first stage turbine adjacent to each unit, and a turbocharger. The discharge port of each rotating unit is in fluid communication with the flow passage of the first stage turbine upstream of its rotor. The rotor of the first stage turbine and the rotor of each rotating unit drive a common load. The outlet of the compressor of the turbocharger is in fluid communication with the inlet of each rotating unit, the inlet of the second stage turbine of the turbocharger and the inlet of its rotor The flow passages downstream of the first stage turbine are in fluid communication. The reaction ratio of the first stage turbine is lower than the reaction ratio of the second stage turbine. A method of compounding at least one rotary engine is also discussed.
