Embodiment Construction

[0017] The following descriptions of various implementations of foveal inverters and methods of making them are illustrative in nature and are not intended to limit the application of the invention or its uses. Accordingly, the various implementations, aspects, versions and embodiments described in the Summary and Detailed Description are by nature non-limiting examples which fall within the scope of the appended claims and are not intended to limit the broadest scope of the claims .

[0018] Many of the steps associated with the manufacture of standard fused bundles, including the special case of fused bundle inverters, are applicable for making bundles and inverters within the scope and spirit of the present invention. These steps are combined in the background art Figure 1A and Figure 1B is outlined. Therefore, the main reference figure 2 It is intended to describe the basic differences between standard fused fiber bundles including standard fused bundle inverters and...

Abstract

An image-conducting fiber optic bundle extends along the central bundle axis between the image input and the image output. The beam is twisted along a portion of its length such that an image input to the image input is angularly displaced about the central beam axis before being output through the image output. Each constituent optical fiber includes a cladding having a cladding diameter and a core having a core diameter corresponding to the fiber diameter of the fiber. The core diameter to cladding diameter ratio defines the core to cladding diameter ratio for each optical fiber. In various embodiments, at least one of the fiber diameter and the core-to-cladding diameter ratio varies with the amount of radial displacement of the fiber from the central bundle axis.

Description

Background technique [0001] Transmission of images, and more generally electromagnetic waves, through bundles of adjacently fused optical fibers is an established technique. Image conduits such as invertors (ie, image inverters), tapers, and "feeders" are well known to practitioners of fiber optic technology. As a non-limiting example, fused fiber optic image catheters are widely used as components in devices such as night vision goggles, rifle scopes, x-ray detectors, and medical imaging equipment. [0002] The basic fabrication techniques for each of the examples listed above have common processing steps. For example, the most basic fused fiber optic image conduit is a one-to-one linear conduit having an input (eg, image receiving) end and an output (eg, image transmitting) end. Light reflected from objects adjacent to the input enters the input as an image. The image is conducted through the catheter and exits the output, from which the image is sensed by a detector devi...
