A novel method for evaluating safety of highways by using driving speed characteristics can be provided by adopting massive vehicle monitoring data collected by a vehicle mounted GPS technology to analyze the speed characteristics of different road unit types; and speed change rules can be obtained through analysis when the vehicles with different types drive on different unit types of a highway, and close combination of highway alignment and the actual driving speed of the vehicles has great significance.
