Embodiment Construction

[0075] Referring now to the drawings, and specifically to figure 1 , a medical fastening or suturing device constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention is indicated generally by reference numeral 20 . As will be described in further detail herein, suturing device 20 may advantageously enable a convenient and efficient means of providing fasteners within a surgical environment. The disclosed embodiments may also facilitate the installation of fasteners or sutures during minimally invasive surgical procedures (eg, laparoscopic procedures, etc.). In the application of laparoscopic treatment of hernias, for example figure 1 The illustrated embodiment reaches an underlying segment of tissue in or near the abdominal region to secure tissue of the abdominal wall or internally secure prosthetic material (eg, a prosthetic mesh) to the abdominal wall. While the embodiments disclosed herein demonstrate tissue fastening suitable for laparoscopic applications, i...

The suturing device may include a firing aperture having at least one needle and a stripper plate, the needle being rotatable relative to the stripper plate and the firing aperture, and configured to engage a suture for deployment; and a drive mechanism operatively coupled to the needle and configured to advance the needle from a retracted position to an extended position during engagement, and retract the needle from the extended position to the retracted position during disengagement.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application is an International Patent Application filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty and claims priority under the Paris Convention and US Patent Application Serial No. 14 / 939,851 filed November 13, 2015. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to medical fastening devices and, more particularly, to sutures and suture devices for fastening tissue and / or prosthetic material. Background technique [0004] There is a long-standing need for tissue fastening in the medical industry and accordingly, a limited number of fastening devices have been developed for different applications and uses. Among these devices there are laparoscopic fastening devices or staple guns that are commonly used in minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic hernia repair and the like. A typical laparoscopic procedure involves inserting thin, elongated instruments into relatively small incisions or access h...
