Abstract

The present application discloses an engine stop-start fuel saving system for industrial vehicles propelled by conventional internal combustion engines and powertrains. The system uses low storage capacity, fast recharging, high cycle life electrical energy storage devices such as supercapacitors. The system also includes a generator coupled to the engine and connected to recharge the electrical energy storage device; and a motor powered by the energy storage device and coupled to the engine. The system also includes a controller that can activate the motor to restart the engine when the engine is stopped, and engage the generator to recharge the electrical energy storage device, and can then stop the engine again when the electrical energy storage device has reached a threshold 10 charge level. The electrical energy storage device also powers at least one of: the overall vehicle equipment; peripheral vehicle equipment; or an electrical outlet circuit with an outlet for an external plug-in device.
