Supercapacitor with high energy density

The energy content of supercapacitor is determined by its capacitance value and working voltage. To attain a high capacitance and a high voltage, several pieces of electrodes and separators are spirally wound with edge sealing to form a bipolar supercapacitor in cylindrical, oval or square configuration. While the winding operation effectively provides a large surface area for high capacitance, the bipolar packaging instantly imparts a unitary roll a minimum working voltage of 5V on using an organic electrolyte. The bipolar roll is a powerful building block for facilitating the assembly of supercapacitor modules. Using containers with multiple compartments, as many bipolar rolls can be connected in series, in parallel or in a combination of the two connections to fabricate integrated supercapacitors with high energy density as required by applications.

An implantable medical device such as a defibrillator is described. The device includes an hermetically sealed housing containing a flat electrolytic capacitor and an energy source such as a battery. The battery is connected to the capacitor and provides charge thereto. The capacitor stores the charge at a relatively high voltage. The charge stored in the capacitor is discharged through a defibrillation lead to a site on or in the heart when fibrillation of the heart is detected by the implantable medical device. Hermetically Sealed Capacitor Assembly

A capacitor assembly that includes a conductive polymer electrolytic capacitor that is enclosed and hermetically sealed within a ceramic housing in the presence of an inert gas is provided. Without intending to be limited by theory, the present inventors believe that the ceramic housing is capable of limiting the amount of oxygen and moisture supplied to the conductive polymer of the capacitor. In this manner, the conductive polymer is less likely to oxidize in high temperature environments, thus increasing the thermal stability of the capacitor assembly.

An electrolytic capacitor with a further lowered impedance is provided. In the electrolytic capacitor in accordance with the present invention, respective currents directed opposite from each other flow through anode and cathode vias extending along the thickness of a substrate. The anode vias are lopsidedly located in a marginal area of an anode electrode pattern, and thus are disposed significantly close to the cathode vias formed in a cathode electrode pattern disposed close to the anode electrode pattern. The cathode vias are lopsidedly located in a marginal area of the cathode electrode pattern, and thus are disposed significantly close to the anode vias. Since the anode and cathode vias are formed close to each other as such, this electrolytic capacitor achieves a lower ESL, thereby attaining an impedance lower than that of a conventional electrolytic capacitor.

Hermetically Sealed Capacitor Assembly

A capacitor assembly that includes an electrolytic capacitor that contains an anode body, dielectric overlying the anode, and a solid electrolyte overlying the dielectric is provided. An anode lead is also electrically connected to the anode body and extends in a longitudinal direction therefrom. The anode lead is connected to an “upstanding” portion of a leadframe. Among other things, this helps to limit substantial horizontal movement of the lead and thereby improve the mechanical robustness of the part. It is believed that the ceramic housing is capable of limiting the amount of oxygen and moisture supplied to the conductive polymer of the capacitor. In this manner, the solid electrolyte (e.g., conductive polymer) is less likely to undergo a reaction in high temperature environments, thus increasing the thermal stability of the capacitor assembly.

More Energy Dense Electrolytic Capacitor

An electrical energy storage device such as a wet tantalum electrolytic capacitor or an electrochemical cell such as a lithium / silver vanadium oxide cell is described. The enclosure comprises a drawn casing portion having a planar face wall supporting a surrounding sidewall and is shaped to nest the anode, cathode and intermediate separator components. A mating cover is a stamped planar piece of similar material having a periphery edge welded to the edge of the casing portion surrounding sidewall. In order to prevent heat generated during the welding process from damaging the separator, the anode portion adjacent to the weld site is contoured. This provides sufficient space between the weld and the separator supported on the anode at the contour so that what heat is transmitted to the separator by convection and conduction mechanism will not damage the separator.

Polymeric restraints for containing an anode in an electrolytic capacitor from high shock and vibration conditions

An electrolytic capacitor comprising a plurality of polymeric structures molded about the periphery of the anode pellet is described. The polymeric structures contact between a weld strap surrounding the butt seam between matingclamshell” casing portions and the anode pellet sidewall. That way, the anode pellet is restrained from moving along both an x- and y-axes inside the casing. Having the cathode active material contacting the opposed major casing sidewalls being in a closely spaced relationship with the anode pellet through an intermediate separator prevents movement along the z-axis. The resulting capacitor is particularly well suited for use in high shock and vibration conditions.
