Embodiment Construction

[0022] figure 1A diameter adjustable endoprosthesis 10 is shown according to some embodiments. As shown, the endoprosthesis 10 includes a stent 12, also described as a stent element or support. The bracket 12 has a first section 14 and a second section 16 . As shown, a base graft 18, also described as a first graft portion, covering or liner, is disposed along the length of the first section 14, while a portion of the second section 16 extends beyond the base graft 18. And is largely uncovered. The terms "graft", "cover" and "liner" are used interchangeably herein and do not imply a particular relative position with respect to the scaffold 12 . The "liner" may surround the stent 12, the "cover" may be received integrally within the stent 12, and the "cushion region" corresponds to the portion of the endoprosthesis that includes the graft layer, whether said graft is internal, external, Again the support element is clamped or positioned relative to the support element. The...

Abstract

A diametrically adjustable endoprosthesis includes a controlled expansion element extending along at least a portion of a graft and is supported by a stent. The controlled expansion element diametrically constrains and limits expansion of the endoprosthesis. Upon deployment from a smaller, delivery configuration, the endoprosthesis can expand to the initial diameter set by the controlled expansionelement. Thereafter, the endoprosthesis can be further diametrically expanded (e.g., using balloon dilation) by mechanically altering the controlled expansion element.

Description

Background technique [0001] Various body cavities, including the various circulatory systems of the human body, are sensitive to internal fluid pressure. For example, it is known that diseased or damaged liver tissue may increase resistance to hepatic perfusion, causing an excessive and often dangerous increase in fluid pressure within the portal circulation. This condition leads to bleeding from gastrointestinal varices as well as pathological conditions such as ascites. [0002] To decompress the portal circulation, the portal vein is connected to the inferior vena cava via the hepatic vein so that a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) can be formed through liver tissue. The procedure described above involves creating a direct access through the liver to allow direct flow between the portal and hepatic veins. In some methods of treatment, the aforementioned pathways are maintained and lined with a stent or stent-graft to form a shunt. The TIPS procedure h...
