Problems solved by technology

This inefficiency occurs because pre-established routes create additional constraints on the search, and when intermediate stop criteria are introduced, existing algorithms are not configured to deviate from established routes, and / or cannot Consider whether an alternative overall route that includes designated stops would be more efficient

example 1

[0074] Example 1. A method implemented by a computing device, comprising: receiving a request to search for a route between an origin and an end point with intermediate stops satisfying search criteria indicative of at least a location type; in response to the searching, obtaining search results having a plurality of route options for routes between the origin and the destination that include intermediate stops satisfying the search criteria, the plurality of route options according to the indicated said search criteria of location type and calculated without constraining the calculation to a pre-established route between said origin and said destination; and selecting from said plurality of route options based on defined optimization criteria best route.

example 2

[0075] Example 2. The method recited in example 1, wherein the location type is a location category.

example 3

[0076] Example 3. The method recited in example 1, wherein the location type is a specific name of a business or place that has a plurality of different locations.

Abstract

Calculating an optimal route based on specified intermediate stops is described herein. A mapping application is configured to compute a route from a start point to an end point in dependence upon criteria specifying one or more intermediate stops. The initial route determination incorporates consideration of the one or more specified intermediate stops as part of calculating the route. In one example, a request is received to search for an intermediate stop that satisfies search criteria indicating at least a type of location. In response to the search, search results are obtained with multiple options for routes between the start point and end point including intermediate stops that satisfy the search criteria. An optimal route is selected from the multiple options based upon defined optimization criteria. The optimization criteria may include but is not limited to distance, travel time, traffic data, weather conditions, date and time, and so forth.

Description

Background technique [0001] The use of navigation aid technology to help individuals get from one place to another is widespread. For example, cars, mobile phones, and even wrist watches may include navigation functionality to provide maps, directions, and searches for points of interest (POIs). Navigation assistance technologies allow users to plan trips, get directions, and even provide updates about the user's location while on the go. Navigation assistance technology may also enable users to "search along a route" for POIs (eg, gas stations, restaurants, parks, hotels, grocery stores, coffee shops, etc.) in conjunction with planned routes between origins and destinations. Traditionally, searching along a route starts with an established route, and then finds POIs along the route based on search criteria. In this way, the selected POI is added as an intermediate stop in the established route by bypassing and then returning to the established route. In scenarios where a u...
