Abstract

A system and method for increasing the proximity sensing distance of a touch and proximity sensitive touch sensor to thereby enable greater distance of detectability of a user in a proximity sensing mode of a touch sensor by driving a time varying voltage or drive signal onto a user who is also holding a touch sensor with at least one hand, and then sensing the drive signal from the user's fingersor thumb on sense electrodes that are on the touch sensor when the fingers are within a proximity sensing distance of sense electrodes in the touch sensor.

Description

Technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to touch and proximity sensors. More specifically, the present invention relates to improving the ability to track a finger holding a touch and approaching a sensitive device. Background technique [0002] There are several designs of capacitive flow sensors that can be used in the present invention. It is useful to examine the underlying technology of the touch sensor to better understand how any capacitance sensitive touchpad can utilize the present invention. [0003] The company's touch panel is a mutual capacitance sensing device and is an example as shown in the block diagram in Figure 1. In the touch panel 10, the grid of X (12) and Y (14) electrodes and the sensing electrode 16 are used to define the touch sensitive area 18 of the touch panel. Generally, the touchpad 10 is a rectangular grid of approximately 16 by 12 electrodes, or 8 by 6 electrodes when there is a space limitation. Interleaved with these X...
